In this video we look at the events that lead up to this brutal engagement and how poor tactical decisions and overconfidence lead to the downfall of a once proud British Army. ---------------------------------------- If you like the video then subscribe to see more exciting episodes in the future. ---------------------------------------- Sources: BritishBattles.com/zulu-war BBC Timewatch: Zulu - The True Story Isandlwana by Ian Castle and Ian Knight Ian Knight - Youtube Channel Excerpts from: Zulu (1964) Zulu Dawn(1979) I highly recommend checking the above films out! Lyndon CMP prieš 1 mėnesį @Kilo Delta There had been no such defences constructed in the near two weeks the army had crossed into Zululand and in fact they were more vulnerable when moving from Rorke's Drift to Isandlwana in the days before, strung out in long lines. Isandlwana could have been defended by the 12 companies there, for sure, even without fortified defences. No need for them. Of course it's back breaking work to maneuver huge heavy British Army wagons (2 dozen men apiece were needed to move just 1 wagon) to protect a camp that is a kilometre in extent. That is no easy task. They weren't small, light Boer wagons. Plus the wagons were still needed for shuttle supply service to and from Rorke's Drift that morning. More importantly (and this is vital), large numbers of Zulus were seen by a lookouts about 7.00 a.m and word got back to Pulleine. At about 8.00 a.m the alarm to 'stand to' in front of the tents was given and the 24th Foot stood to in front of the tents for 2 1/2 hours in preparation of a Zulu attack, until Durnford arrived after 10.00 a., and ordered them to stand down around 10.30. No time to carry out major defensive undertakings. Then Durnford left to chase after Zulus shortly after. Building walls out of rocks?? 1 km in extent? How long is that going to take when the report of Zulus at 8.00 a.m came in? Pulleine rather stood the troops to, so they would be prepared for the coming Zulus. The British army has never panicked at the first sign of trouble anyway. There were still 6 infantry companies, Colonial forces, the NNC and soon to arrive Durnford and his 250 or so armed horsemen. It was the arrival of Durnford that upset the apple cart. Instead of acting strictly on the defensive and reinforcing the camp, Durnford chose to ride off to attack the Zulus, thus bring the battle on because the Zuus did not plan to attack until the next day. We can see from Pulleine's morning 'stand to' order that, left to his own devises, Pulleine would have chosen a tighter defensive position just in front of the tents, where the men stood to earlier. However, Durnford forced Pulleine's hand and said he expected Pulleine to support him if he got into difficulties, which he did. Durnford choose to make a stand in the donga 1 mile out on the front right flank and Pulleine was forced to extend his line out far and wide to support Durnford's left flank. Durnford is most to blame for the tactical blunders at Isandlwana itself. Chelmsford was not even there.

Kilo Delta prieš 3 mėnesius (redaguota) I saw the phorensic examination of the battlefield, it was really eye opening, from finding the spent cartridges they could show how far apart each red coat was, they weren't standing shoulder to shoulder but up to six yards (5mtrs) apart and they were in single line not three deep for rank of fire or square, so once one or two soldier's were killed it left massive gaps in the line, once that happened it was game over. There was some nonsense about boxes of ammunition being screwed down and being issued slowly but that was disproved just by dropping an ammo box of that era on the ground and it falling apart or by simply opening it easily with an issue bayonet of the time, they also showed that because of the amount of fire and the heat of the day the rifles would overheat and lead to stoppages, once a very thin line of soldiers who were widely spaced apart started getting stoppeges in their rifles they were quickly killed and the gaps in the line quickly exploited. The battlefield detectives also found many damaged unfired cartridges on the line, and showed that because the metal of the cartridges was so soft that in the panic of the approaching Zulu warriors, the soldiers were loading their rifles incorrectly they would damage the cartridge and have to reload with a new cartridge. Basically these soldiers were badly led and made to believe that the spear and shield was no match for the Martini Henry and the bayonet. No effort was made to fortify their position/camp and the soldiers ultimately paid the price with their lives because of the ineptitude of their commanding officers.
