Ok. I know this is my inner 13 year old talking but...let's be real 90% of the sentences in this book can be taken out of context and used as innuendo and there were like at least 2 or 3 parts that had me choking on my coffee AM I ALONE IN THIS Ok time to put on my maturity again....It's good this exists. It's something that I feel like I was supposed to read in high school but maybe either we didn't read it or I just read cliff notes? Because reading is actually tough for me. So having it read in audio format is like I get to have all new experiences because I can "read" books like this now and find that they're actually pretty interesting when I'm not stressed because all the words in the page jumble together to try and strangle me

ELLEN CLARK prieš 1 metus My novel of all time!! Has even supplanted Frankenstein by M Shelley. I have listened to this audio 3 times and read book 2.5 times... I am utterly OBSESSED!! I have 4 or 5 t-shirts which have different quotes from the novel as well and made up a cartoon about Ahab confronting a Jamaican whale ship about MD's whereabouts lol (haven't sent it to the new Yorker yet as I haven't found a cartoonist to draw it up my own efforts are unintelligible Anyways ever time I read the book I'm blown away and discover phrases or chapters afresh with a new insight. Ahh the genius that is Melville. It is a challenge to get through some of the book but it IS WELL WORTH IT. I listened to lectures and read critical books about the different meanings which helped tremendously in my understanding of it. Plus you always have your own ideas about things. Persevere oh struggling readers you will be muchly rewarded

PipeCat prieš 1 metus What a verbose author. The epic battle with the whale is the least expounded component of the book. Such a strange fate that most "modern" men aren't as intense as they were in Melville's day. We substitute electronic media for their thought process and we let box office insanity substitute human spirit. It's all endothermic now, not exothermic as it was many years ago. We spectate rather than create. I probably identify inwardly with ethical Starbuck and outwardly with cynical Stubb. How about you?

Vishweshwer Mangalapalli prieš 1 mėnesį Folks are talking of reading this book as if they are forced to drink poison or lift mountains ( a la Sisyphus).... why do it if it is an effort and not an act of love and desire ? As far as I am concerned, it is one of the greatest books ever written and I am reading it with a great sense of gratitude and happiness.... the second time.

Reanna Hardy prieš 5 mėnesius I'm really glad this audiobook exists; when I read along with an audiobook, it makes it easier for me to concentrate on what I'm reading. Though I did get a little intimidated by the number of chapters in this book, and how long this video was. Though it does make me grateful that my teacher wanted me to read only one chapter instead of the whole book. The latter would've taken me months to finish!

Allan Hegyes prieš 7 mėnesius Should only this method of obtaining the substance of a book existed in my high school years, I might have had a better go of it, the flowery language parsed by some smarter fellow than I, only having the auditory sense engaged, I could have left the understanding only to my ears, rather than the ear/eye coordination required of books, and might have got a better grade. Who knows at which promontory I might have ended!? a richer, better man than I am at present.

Yes indeed, time and tide flow wide, thank you for the lovely alliteration Mr. Melville. But there appears to be one thing missing. When I read a novel, I always read the page numbers, even just glancingly out of the corners of my eyes. How can one not read the page numbers? After all, page numbers help solidly ground a work in reality. Plus page numbers can allow a reader to determine whether or not he or she has turned too many pages at the same time, which can be particularly important (and likely to happen) if the pages are printed on thin paper. Why take chances? And yet this reader appears to have omitted not just a few page numbers, but every single one of them. What gives? Is this some kind of conspiracy? Not wanting to leap to any wild conclusions, I investigated several other audio books. And guess what - no page numbers. Logical conclusion: Yes, it does appear to be a conspiracy, and a rather widespread conspiracy at that. Therefore if you do not like conspiracies and appreciate the importance of page numbers, please subscribe to my channel. My channel is firmly grounded in reality. And if I ever deign to read a public domain novel aloud in the form of a video, rest assured that I shall not leave out a single page number. Thank you and fare thee well.
