A chronological presentation of some of the more unique and important uniforms to represent the evolution of the American Civil War “Blue and Grey” from just before the spark of the war in 1861 to Union victory and occupation in 1865.
This project is meant to honor men from both the north and the south -- now together forever in eternity — who served their countries, their states and their comrades while wearing these uniforms, weapons, and accouterments — during some of the most brutal battles Americans have ever faced. Shot in 4K and featuring nine of the best Living Historians in the country.
As accurately as we possibly could, and one uniform at a time.… telling the story of the 2.75 Million soldiers who once wore these sacks coats, shell jackets and kepis with pride — each soldier earning a debt we should all be duty-bound to continue to honor.

@Michael Vaughn lol! I agree! Those uniforms just don't possess the dignity or gravitas of the others. From a strictly aesthetic perspective, and if I might be permitted a "female observation", no soldier ever looked better than Lee, Sherman, Beauregard, Chamberlain, etc. etc. than when you see them in their "best." (That's just my ipse dixit, lol!) I almost forgot Nathan Bedford Forrest!

You are correct, but at Appomattox Lee wore his full dress uniform for the surrender which I believe did bear the collar rank insignia of a full Confederate general. At that time Lee held the rank of Commander-in-Chief of all Confederate armies as a result of an act of the Confederate Congress in February of 1865.

Awesome video, I am directly descended on my dads dads side from a soldier in the 32nd Missouri infantry (Union), my great-great-great grandfather who was the regimental teamster, I’m also related on my moms moms side to a soldier in the 166th Ohio infantry who moved to Michigan after the war, and I remember someone in my family mentioning we had an ancestor who fought in a Michigan regiment during the war which is entirely possible because my moms dads side have been in Michigan since the 1830

What a great video!!!! Excellent images, lighting and setting. So many neat little details. Now to nit-pick. IMO the 11th NY Fire Zouave should have a Fireman's belt and a US M1855 Rifle (the image of Pvt Brownell with his two band rifle and sword bayonet is so enduring) . The US Regular Infantryman's issued frock is missing the light blue piping on cuff and collar (do not recall if earlier version of the US Enlistedman's frock had piping or not). Cool to see a Black sailor (the only integrated branch of the US armed services of the period). It would have been cool if the 13th PA Bucktail had a Sharps rifle (issued Aug 1862). Hospital Corpsman - wearing hospital steward's sleeve chevrons, maybe instead of that a green band around his forage cap??? The North Carolina soldier was excellent (mix of CS produced and imported British items). The VMI cadet is a cool image, even had his Austrian Lorenz!! Also, great to see a decent Veteran Reserve Corps soldier, though being part of the US Regular army he would definitely not be missing his cartridge box plate.

It's ironic that the Confederate States of America had more than ten times the number of Volunteer Black Soldiers, and they were integrated, yet the north teaches the war was about slavery.
Shamefully, our US military wasn't integrated until nearly one hundred years later. I'm grateful that they have represented the Black Soldiers on both sides.

Uniforms are accurate though the "commanding general" uniform lacks some context. Lee refused to wear his official rank the three stars are actually the confederate rank of Colonel. Lee wore this rank as it was the highest he achieved in the US Army and decided not to wear the confederate general rank (three stars in a wreath) until the war was decided. Additionally it would have been good to do more direct unit comparisons between the years to see the relaxation of regulation, and modification to accept the realities of modern war
