On 9 January 1945, the U.S. Army returned to the island of Luzon in the Philippines. Landing on the beaches along Lingayen Gulf, Sixth Army sought to undo the Imperial Japanese Army’s conquest of 1942. To that end, between 3 February and 3 March, elements of Sixth Army participated in a month-long block by block, building by building battle to liberate the Philippine capital of Manila from its Imperial Japanese occupiers.
“Liberation of Manila” recounts the U.S. Army’s most difficult experience with urban warfare during the Second World War, and the only one in the Pacific Theater.

Yep. Economic disruption really made the situation in South Vietnam much more difficult as professionals like doctors and lawyers made much less money than prostitutes or smugglers. Likewise, the paltry pay of ARVN conscripts meant that they would risk their family's welfare if they spent two years without a decent paycheck while ARVN officers had to either engage in corruption or subsist on very cheap food (my father observed three ARVN officers buying a big bag of rice and eating it rather than pay for more regular food).
Probably most of the trouble in Vietnam was due to frustration over the corruption of a lot of the smugglers and officials than in favor of the Communists. Heck, the refugees from the North could have been a pillar of stability and prosperity but Diem just let them get abused. Thieu came in too late.
That also kept the more competent unwilling to continue serving as the trade-off between honesty and competence made for some hard choices.

Fitting this is premiered two days before Independence Day. It's worth remembering that the U.S. Liberation of the Philippines was (except for Guam and Wake) unique in all of American foreign wars: it was the liberation of American soil and Americans of a U.S. Commonwealth. The failure to defend the Philippines in 1941-42 was one of the great failures and shames of America's Second World War, its liberation in 1945 was one of its greatest triumphs. The U.S. Army never fought a more meaningful battle.

Very well-researched video, including discussion on post-liberation economy in Manila. Thanks from this economist in Manila. I also appreciated the extensive use of maps in the presentation, explaining the locations and buildings involved, many of which still stand today. God bless all of those who sacrificed, perished and participated in bringing the city back to life.
